BaSyx benefits and application examples

BaSys 4.0 enables the digitalization of manufacturing processes and the implementation of Industrie 4.0. Eclipse BaSyx is an Open-Source reference implementation of BaSys 4.0 concepts that include common Industrie 4.0 components and a Software Development Kit (SDK) that supports the development of new components. Eclipse BaSyx did originate from the BaSys 4.0 project, which is funded by the german ministry of Research and Education. The following examples highlight common Industrie 4.0 use-cases that can be realized with the BaSyx middleware:

  • Digitalization of production
BaSys enables realization of Asset Administration Shells (AAS) for all production entities, e.g. for products, devices, and workers. An AAS provides data through defined and regular interfaces, and therefore enable data analysis and data exchange across all production line devices, even if they are from different vendors. Consequently, a BaSys 4.0 conforming production has all production relevant production data available.
  • Changeable production
Changing the architecture of a production system into a service based production enables production of multiple product types on the same line. By changing service orchestrations, i.e. the invoked services and service parameter, on-the-fly creation of new product types is possible. This enables rapid adaptation to changed product needs and to customized products. Service based interfaces integrate devices from different vendors into one production system. This way, orders may be moved to similar devices if a device fails.
  • All information is always available
Our customizable AAS provide data through regular interfaces. Customized AAS also may aggregate and forward data, supporting a data flow through the complete production process. By adapting AAS implementations, information aggregation and forwarding may be adapted and tailored to the needs of specific automation contexts.
