Eclipse IoT Day Paris Saclay 2019

For the first time, the Eclipse IoT community organizes an event in Paris Saclay. For this one day event, we are building a great program that includes topics like Smart cities, Edge computing, Industry 4.0, Robotics, as well as the core Eclipse IoT technologies.

As we have several international speakers, the conference will happen in English.

The program is still under construction, we expect to announce it in late April. Contact us if you have a good topic to present!

Why open-source matters to IoT by Mike Milinkovich, Eclipse Foundation

IoT projects are very different than traditional software ones. For example, sensors and constrained devices can be embedded in cars, buildings, sidewalks and many other hard to reach places. In most cases, their lifespan is counted in years, if not decades. Replacing them because of security flaws will probably not be an option. What do those devices actually do? Are they secure? What happens if the device is not supported anymore by its maker? It will be much easier to answer those questions if your IoT strategy is built on open source.

In this session, you will learn why open source is central to IoT, and why the Eclipse IoT Working Group is the open source center of gravity for the Internet of Things. You will also discover why specification projects, such as Eclipse Sparkplug, are an important part of the future of open source IoT.

State of the Union of Eclipse IoT by Frédéric Desbiens, Eclipse Foundation

In this presentation, Frédéric Desbiens, IoT and Edge Computing Program Manager at the Eclipse Foundation, will share with you what happened in the Eclipse IoT Ecosystem in the last year and what is the Foundation's roadmap for the future. The Edge Breakout -- From Cloud and Edge to Boundary-less Computing by Angelo Corsaro, Chief Technology Officer, ADLINK Technologies Inc.

This presentation will take you on a journey through Cloud-, Edge- and Fog-Computing with the intent of highlighting how these different architectural paradigms address the needs of existing and emerging applications in IoT, Industrial IoT and Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC). In this presentation we argue that instead of trying to define boundaries identified by inevitably fuzzy edges, we should unify compute, storage, communication and I/O end-to-end. Then we'll (1) introduce Eclipse fog∅5, an Open Source fog computing Infrastructure that unifies computing, networking and storage fabrics end-to-end, while addressing the challenges imposed by resource heterogeneity, (2) explain the novel architectural approach adopted by fog∅5 to have a server-less data-centric architecture that is scalable, secure, and highly resilient to failures, (3) demonstrate the use of fog∅5 in some real-world use cases and (4) conclude and reports on future works.

Model-based Tool for Composition, Deployment, and Validation of IoT Smart Behaviors by Shuai Li, Research engineer at CEA LIST and Etienne Gandrille - CEA LETI

BRAIN-IoT provides a model-based framework for a decentralized, composable, and dynamic federation of smart autonomous applications on heterogeneous IoT platforms, overcoming the challenge of cross-platform interoperability. Based on the OSGi architecture, bundled applications are stored within marketplaces in the cloud and, upon request by connected devices, dynamically deployed over edge nodes thanks to AI features. Communication protocols, semantics, and capabilities are abstracted through the W3C Web of Things (WoT) Thing Descriptions.

After a brief introduction to the BRAIN-IoT architecture, this talk will focus on the IDE of BRAIN-IoT. Based on the new IoT Modeling Language, provided by the Eclipse Papyrus modeler, the tool bridges the gap between the heterogeneous IoT platforms. Code and metadata generators help with application packaging and upload to the cloud, supporting OSGi bundling and W3C WoT Thing Descriptions. Monitoring, rapid (de)commissioning, and reconfiguration of devices are achieved with the Eclipse sensiNact solution through a Models@run.time approach.

Other-the-Air firmware update on microcontrollers has always been a challenging - but required - topic to secure an IoT application. The RIOT operating system - - provides all the building blocks to perform firmware updates, with end-to-end security and standard protocols.

IoT challenges for Complex Systems by Arnaud Samama, R&T Manager at Thales

Existing solutions for IoT Stacks are heavily fragmented between actors: Cloud Providers, Network operators, Edge, devices providers, etc. Most of the deployed systems are integrating a single actor for each level of the IoT Stack. This result comes from the lack of standards requiring custom integrations.

Using IoT in complex systems will need the federation of multiple actors opening the Pandora’s box: interoperability, cybersecurity, safety chain, resilience. Recent acquisitions such as FreeRTOS(Amazon), ExpressLogic (Microsoft) or JR automation(Hitachi) demonstrate the need for more integrated solutions.

What are the Thales expectations from IoT solution providers ?

Experimentations with Eclipse IoT technologies at EDF by Benjamin Rousseaux, IT Architect at EDF R&D

IoT is starting to be widely deployed at EDF but there are still many challenges to take up on which EDF R&D is working. One of these challenges is security around the Internet of Things, particularly in the nuclear field and for the integration of operational technologies with IT. We can also mention the problems of interoperability between objects and platforms and the complexity to manage connected objects through different networks (public or private LoRA, Sigfox, LTE-M, NB-IoT, ...) and for a wide variety of uses cases (smart home, smart building, smart factory, smart city, ...). This presentation will show how we connected LoRaWAN sensors to the industrial IS using Kura, it will also detail the current experiments to manage IoT gateways and to simplify device provisionning with a smartphone using Leshan.

Enabling Emergent Mobile IoT Systems: Middleware Interoperability & QoS Analysis by Nikolaos Georgantas, Head of the MiMove research team at Inria

The profusion of IoT middleware-layer interaction protocols has introduced technology diversity and high fragmentation in the IoT systems landscape with siloed vertical solutions. To enable the interconnection of heterogeneous Things across these barriers, advanced interoperability solutions at the middleware layer are required. In this talk, I present a solution for the automated synthesis of lightweight protocol mediators that support the interconnection of heterogeneous Things. Our systematic approach relies on connector abstractions that comprehensively represent existing and potentially future IoT middleware protocols. Our solution further supports evaluating the effectiveness of the interconnection in terms of end-to-end QoS. More specifically, we enable performance modeling and analysis as well as end-to-end system tuning, while considering several system parameters related to the mobile IoT. Our aim is to enable the design and development of emergent mobile IoT systems, which are dynamically composed from available Things in the environment.


Alexandre Abadie

Alexandre is one of the main contributors of RIOT. He worked on adding support for LoRaWAN to RIOT as well as extending its hardware support. He is also a member of the FIT IoT-LAB - - platform, a large scale experimentation testbed for the Internet of Things, he is managing the IoT-LAB site of Saclay.

Thibault Cantegrel

Founder of the Developer Program at Sierra Wireless in 2011, Thibault is in charge of building and growing the developer community & ecosystem of partners around Sierra Wireless cellular IoT programmable products. Sierra Wireless developer community has become the most active cellular IoT developer community worldwide.

Thibault organizes & manages Sierra Wireless developer events (IoT meetups, challenges, workshops) and the annual keynote of Sierra Wireless: the IoT Innovation Summit (400p, Paris) that he started as a "Developer Day" back in 2013.

French, with a strong technical background, Thibault has a broad international experience in product management, marketing, community management, evangelism, open source and Internet of Things.

In 2000, Thibault co-founded Anyware Technologies, a French start-up in web applications and cloud platforms that prospered from its open-source expertise, succesfully sold to Wavecom in 2008, and acquired by Sierra Wireless in 2009.

Angelo Corsaro

Angelo Corsaro, Ph.D. is Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at ADLINK Technology Inc. where he leads the Advanced Technology Office and looks after corporate technology strategy and innovation.

Angelo is a world top expert in edge/fog computing and a well know researcher in the area of high performance and large scale distributed systems. Angelo has over 100 publications on referred journals, conferences, workshops, and magazines.

Etienne Gandrille

Etienne Gandrille received the Ph.D. degree from the University of Grenoble, Grenoble, France. He is a Researcher with the Commissariat à l’Énergie atomique et aux Énergies Alternatives, Grenoble, France. His current research interests include Internet of Things, smart cities, and open data. He has been involved in several international research and innovation projects, including SocIoTal (FP7), OrganiCity (H2020), BigClouT (H2020), and Brain-IoT (H2020).

Nikolaos Georgantas

Nikolaos Georgantas is Researcher in computer science at Inria Paris and Head of the MiMove research team on mobile distributed systems and supporting middleware. He was also co-founder and scientific co-adviser of Ambientic, an Inria research spin-off, which developed mobile collaborative applications. He received a Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from the National Technical University of Athens and a habilitation degree in computer science from UPMC/Sorbonne University. His research interests relate to mobile distributed systems, middleware, ubiquitous computing, service-oriented computing and self-adaptive systems. He has more than eighty publications on these topics. Nikolaos is currently working on interoperability and QoS analysis of IoT systems and online social networks, as well as real-time IoT data stream processing at the network edge. He has been involved in a large number of European and international research projects, among which recently H2020 CHOReVOLUTION and FIESTA-IoT, and has undertaken work package leader and PI roles.

Nicolas Generali

Nicolas Generali studied engineering and Information Technology and received two engineering master’s degree (from french Air Force academy and Telecom ParisTech Institute).

After several jobs in IT sector he has been working in transport ticketing sector since 2011 when he was in charge of electronic ticketing standardization for SNCF (The National French Railways operator). He participated for SNCF to several European and national ticketing projects and standardization bodies in charge of defining national standards for ticketing interoperability on smart cards and NFC devices.

SNCF being one of the stronger promoters of the Calypso Standard he has also contributed to the promotion of Calypso Standard for Calypso Network Association in many national and international events. Since January 2017, he is full time seconded by SNCF as Calypso technical manager to improve the development of Calypso technology and is in particular project manager for Eclipse-Keyple

Pierre Hoffmann

Pierre Hoffmann is a business developer who has worked for companies such as TOTAL and Microsoft. Pierre was initially interested in Artificial Intelligence and the way it reshapes the economy, before diving into IoT & Distributed Ledger Technologies, where he has been active for more than a year. Pierre brings his vision and energy helping IOTA expand across companies and various organizations to move towards a larger corporate adoption of IOTA.

Shuai Li

Shuai Li, PhD, is a project manager and research engineer at the CEA LIST institute in France. He is a committer on the open-source Eclipse Papyrus project, a UML modeler. He obtained a PhD in computer science, on the topic of schedulability analysis of TDMA software radio protocols. His current research is related to model-based design and deployment of embedded AI systems. He is involved in several industrial and European collaborative R&D projects involving autonomous vehicle platforms, and distributed smart applications in IoT/CPS systems. He is also supervising several PhD research projects on convergence of deep learning and software engineering. In his free time, Shuai is a sessional lecturer at the French National Institute of Nuclear Sciences and Techniques (INSTN), part of the Paris-Saclay University. He teaches model-based system engineering with UML, SysML, and MARTE.

Benjamin Rousseaux

Benjamin Rousseaux is an IT architect at EDF R&D. He has mainly worked on open source technologies to evolve the R&D and EDF information system (operating systems, CMS, supervision and operation of IT infrastructure, DevOps tools, IaaS, PaaS, CaaS, IoT, ...). Today he is responsible of the architecture part of an IoT project and project manager on BIM (Building Information Modeling).

Arnaud Samama

Arnaud Samama is R&T Manager at the Thales Software Technical Directorate for Computer Engineering & IoT. He has more than 20 years of experience in the design of hardware and software for embedded systems in domains such as Radars, Mobile Phone, High-Performance Embedded Computers or Military Avionic computers. Before joining Thales in 2014, he worked for companies such as Philips, Thales, Mercury Computers, Zodiac Aerospace. Arnaud is representing Thales for the ECS Strategic Research Agenda and in the RISC-V foundation.
