Eclipse DemoCamps 2008 - Ganymede Edition/Karlsruhe/Session abstracts

This is the list of session abstracts for the Karlsruhe DemoCamp in June 2008.

Continuous Quality Assurance with inCode

[inCode] is a plugin for Eclipse's Java development environment, that has a different approach to software quality assurance than any other previous tool. Using inCode saves you the overhead of lengthy code review and restructuring sessions, by allowing you to detect and correct design problems continuously, as you code. In a sense, the tool acts as a virtual "pair programming buddy", that helps you stay in control of your code, and prevents emerging design flaws from becoming acute and therefore expensive to remove. Of course, the tool can also be used in a traditional manner, to perform off-line software quality assessments on large projects written in Java. inCode is the concretization of a number of ideas, some of which received an IBM Eclipse Innovation Award in 2006.

Adrian Trifu is a co-founder of [Intooitus], and a researcher in the area of object oriented software quality assurance and evolution. Between 2001 and 2007, he has worked as a researcher and consultant in the software engineering group of the [FZI] Research Center for Information Technology in Karlsruhe, Germany. In 2008, he earned his PhD from the University of Karlsruhe, with a thesis on automated diagnosis of design flaws in object oriented systems.

GMF/EMF based Substation Engineering Tool

The Transmission and Distribution of Energy is evolving to a high degree of automation. IEC61850 is an upcoming international standard for the modelling and real-time communication protocol in this domain. HELINKS LLC has implemented an Eclipse based engineering tool supporting IEC61850. This tool makes use of GMF for the graphical editors (Single Line Editor) and EMF for the entire domain modeling.

Jörg Reuter is owner and director of HELINKS LLC, Switzerland. He has worked as R&D manager, software architect, consultant and software developer.

Polarion and Eclipse

Who is Polarion? Why Eclipse? What is Polarion doing with Eclipse?

Search-enhanced Software Development with Eclipse

Most applications are still created by integrating in-house legacy software and self-developed modules, rather than by assembling third party components / services, despite the fact that in many development situations, perfectly suitable software components are available in online repositories. The main barrier to third party software reuse, whether it be of program modules, web services or more complex components, is still the overhead involved in finding software that is "fit for purpose". Most developers still feel that the "build" option is more cost effective that the "find" or "buy" option. However, this balance has started to change in the last few years with the advent of a new generation of code search engines. Not only do these engines index far more components than was possible before, but they make it much easier to find software that meet a particular need. They also make it possible to consider component reuse during early stages of development such as modelling and design. Code Conjurer is an Eclipse plugin that makes use of the component search engine merobase.com and assists Java developers in finding code by providing reusable assets that are likely to provide the functionality of the user's component under development. Thereby there is no extra effort for the user, as Code Conjurer is working pro-actively and in background gathering its information directly from the Java code.
