This presentation will take you on a journey through  Cloud-, Edge- and Fog-Computing with the intent of highlighting how these different architectural paradigms address the needs of existing and emerging applications in IoT, Industrial IoT and Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC).  In this presentation we argue that instead of trying to define boundaries identified by inevitably fuzzy edges, we should unify compute, storage,  communication and I/O end-to-end. Then we'll (1) introduce Eclipse fog∅5, an Open Source fog computing Infrastructure that unifies computing, networking and storage fabrics end-to-end, while addressing the challenges imposed by resource heterogeneity, (2) explain the novel architectural approach adopted by fog∅5 to have a server-less data-centric architecture that is scalable, secure, and highly resilient to failures, (3) demonstrate the use of fog∅5 in some real-world use cases and (4) conclude and reports on future works.
  
Fog computing aims at providing horizontal, system-level, abstractions to distribute computing, storage, control and networking functions closer to the user along a cloud-to-thing continuum. Whilst fog computing is increasingly recognized as the key paradigm at the foundation of Consumer and Industrial Internet of Things (IoT), most of the initiatives on fog computing focus on extending cloud infrastructure. As a consequence, these infrastructures fall short in addressing heterogeneity and resource constraints characteristics of fog computing environments.
 
In this presentation, we (1) explain the requirements of fog computing infrastructure and how they extend well beyond those traditionally addressed by Cloud Computing infrastructures; (2) introduce Eclipse fog∅5, an Open Source fog computing Infrastructure that unifies computing, networking and storage fabrics end-to-end, while addressing the challenges imposed by resource heterogeneity, (3) explain the novel architectural approach adopted by fog∅5 to have a server-less data- centric architecture that is scalable, secure, and highly resilient to failures, (4) demonstrate the use of fog∅5 in some real-world use cases and (5) conclude and reports on future works.

For the first time, the Eclipse IoT community organizes an event in Paris Saclay. For this one day event, we are building a great program that includes topics like Smart cities, Edge computing, Industry 4.0, Robotics, as well as the core Eclipse IoT technologies.

As we have several international speakers, the conference will happen in English.

The program is still under construction, we expect to announce it in late April. Contact us if you have a good topic to present!

State of the Union of Eclipse IoT by Frédéric Desbiens, Eclipse Foundation

Where are we coming from? Where are we? Where are we going? In this presentation, Frédéric Desbiens, IoT and Edge Computing Program Manager at the Eclipse Foundation, will share with you what happened in the Eclipse IoT Ecosystem in the last year and what is the Foundation's roadmap for the future. IoT challenges for Complex Systems by Arnaud Samama, R&T Manager at Thales

Existing solutions for IoT Stacks are heavily fragmented between actors: Cloud Providers, Network operators, Edge, devices providers, etc. Most of the deployed systems are integrating a single actor for each level of the IoT Stack. This result comes from the lack of standards requiring custom integrations.

Using IoT in complex systems will need the federation of multiple actors opening the Pandora’s box: interoperability, cybersecurity, safety chain, resilience. Recent acquisitions such as FreeRTOS(Amazon), ExpressLogic (Microsoft) or JR automation(Hitachi) demonstrate the need for more integrated solutions.

Model-based Tool for Composition, Deployment, and Validation of IoT Smart Behaviors by Shuai Li, Research engineer at CEA LIST

BRAIN-IoT provides a model-based framework for a decentralized, composable, and dynamic federation of smart autonomous applications on heterogeneous IoT platforms, overcoming the challenge of cross-platform interoperability. Based on the OSGi architecture, bundled applications are stored within marketplaces in the cloud and, upon request by connected devices, dynamically deployed over edge nodes thanks to AI features. Communication protocols, semantics, and capabilities are abstracted through the W3C Web of Things (WoT) Thing Descriptions.

After a brief introduction to the BRAIN-IoT architecture, this talk will focus on the IDE of BRAIN-IoT. Based on the new IoT Modeling Language, provided by the Eclipse Papyrus modeler, the tool bridges the gap between the heterogeneous IoT platforms. Code and metadata generators help with application packaging and upload to the cloud, supporting OSGi bundling and W3C WoT Thing Descriptions. Monitoring, rapid (de)commissioning, and reconfiguration of devices are achieved with the Eclipse sensiNact solution through a Models@run.time approach.

Eclipse Keyple: the Open Source SDK for access control based on secure contactless technology by Olivier Delcroix

Discover Calypso, the historical protocol for contactless electronic ticketing and its open source implementation Eclipse Keyple. Used all around the world, it provides high-security solutions for online and offline secure transactions. Calypso is deployed as a transport public ticketing solutions in 125 cities around the world (Paris - Navigo, Grenoble (Oura), Montreal, Lisboa...).

Angelo Corsaro

Angelo Corsaro, Ph.D. is Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at ADLINK Technology Inc. where he leads the Advanced Technology Office and looks after corporate technology strategy and innovation.

Angelo is a world top expert in edge/fog computing and a well know researcher in the area of high performance and large scale distributed systems. Angelo has over 100 publications on referred journals, conferences, workshops, and magazines.

Specialties: Fog/Edge Computing, Industrial and Consumer Internet of Things, Innovation and Innovation Management, Product Strategy, Open Source, High Performance Computing, Large Scale Mission/Business Critical Distributed Systems, Real-Time Systems, Software Patterns, Functional Programming Languages

Olivier Delcroix

Olivier has worked 10 years with Java open source technology. He was a technical consultant and evangelist for Bonita open source worklow engine. Now he works with IoT (Calypso) and Blockchain (Ethereum).

Shuai Li

Shuai Li, PhD, is a project manager and research engineer at the CEA LIST institute in France. He is a committer on the open-source Eclipse Papyrus project, a UML modeler. He obtained a PhD in computer science, on the topic of schedulability analysis of TDMA software radio protocols. His current research is related to model-based design and deployment of embedded AI systems. He is involved in several industrial and European collaborative R&D projects involving autonomous vehicle platforms, and distributed smart applications in IoT/CPS systems. He is also supervising several PhD research projects on convergence of deep learning and software engineering. In his free time, Shuai is a sessional lecturer at the French National Institute of Nuclear Sciences and Techniques (INSTN), part of the Paris-Saclay University. He teaches model-based system engineering with UML, SysML, and MARTE.

Arnaud Samama

Arnaud Samama is R&T Manager at the Thales Software Technical Directorate for Computer Engineering & IoT. He has more than 20 years of experience in the design of hardware and software for embedded systems in domains such as Radars, Mobile Phone, High-Performance Embedded Computers or Military Avionic computers. Before joining Thales in 2014, he worked for companies such as Philips, Thales, Mercury Computers, Zodiac Aerospace. Arnaud is representing Thales for the ECS Strategic Research Agenda and in the RISC-V foundation.
