这个不幸被命名为“Eclipse”的项目是一个致力于生产Eclipse SDK的项目。当Eclipse中仅有两个或三个项目时，该名字才有了它原本的意义，但是现在它经常被称为“Eclipse顶级项目”以减少混淆（或者当我们感到它的宏伟时仅称其为“平台”）。该项目依次由四个子项目组成：[http://www.eclipse.org/platform/ 平台]、[http://www.eclipse.org/jdt/ Java开发工具（JDT）]、[http://www.eclipse.org/pde/ 插件开发环境(PDE)]和[http://wiki.eclipse.org/Eclipse/Incubator Eclipse/孵化器]。到[[Ganymede|Ganymede]]版的时候，Eclipse项目又包含了[http://www.eclipse.org/equinox/ Equinox]子项目，但是该子项目已经被放入[http://wiki.eclipse.org/RT RT]顶级项目中了。Eclipse项目中将会有一个已被提议的第五个子项目，代码编号为[http://wiki.eclipse.org/E4 e4]，该子项目将探索下一代Eclipse平台的技术。
