Retrofitting of Legacy Machines

During production, shopfloor machines generate valuable process information which helps manufacturers in decision-making. However, one of the challenges is to make the data accessible from legacy machines. The Arendar IoT-Gateway collects "live" process information from the shopfloor machines and makes it available for further processing. In this project, the Basys-native Arendar enables networking of machines and processes which facilicates a point-to-point communication with other IT-systems. BaSyx represents the data in asset administration shells in a standardized and structured way for reuse. The digitalization of production processes provides holistic live process images to decition-makers who use them to identify and resolve problems faster. With the continuous process monitoring, manufacturers can detect machine failures earlier, control product quality during the production and perform real-time decision-making. Consequently, this improves the market responsiveness, reduces the maintenance costs and increases the production efficiency.

Overview of BaSysPLM

Integration of a PLM System (BaSysPLM)

In the area of product development, PLM systems are the central data hub. They consider the entire product lifecycle from planning to disposal and provide holistic management of all data and information that is processed and distributed during the development or modification of products. The BaSys-PLM-coupling developed in the project and integrated in BaSyx allows PLM data from product development to be reused in subsequent production. BaSyx can use this data to control and adapt production processes. Conversely, production data acquired with BaSyx can be transferred to a PLM system. In concrete terms, the coupling allows, for example, production data to be linked with other data from the entire product life cycle and used for continuous product improvement. For many applications, the detour via an ERP/MES system can also be omitted, i.e. machines can communicate directly with the PLM system.

Information exchange with digital twins

In typical digitalization scenarios, a single production facility is considered. But the scope of BaSyx goes beyond that. Information from the digital twins are relevant throughout the whole lifecycle of a product and therefore, they need to be exchanged across company borders. Pickert & Partner GmbH and HPO Häfner Präzisionsteile Oberrot GmbH extend the focus on a production line to a production network that also includes the direct customers. In BaSys4SupplyQ product quality and calibration data is reflected within the Asset Administration Shell and the BaSys Middleware is utilized for a horizontal integration that enables new data-driven business models.

Digitalization of manufacturing process

Digitization of production processes brings considerable advantages for small scale enterprises (SMEs) in terms of optimized production planning and associated competence. Especially the improved order evaluations enable the SMEs to quickly, efficiently and reliably evaluate and plan the production plans as well as promptly meeting short term customer enquiries. Since the checking and creation of the order process is automated, substantial improvement in flexibility and cost efficiency in the process of order acceptance in comparison to the legacy manual paper-based processes is realized. The project also investigates the concept production as service (PaaS). The Industry 4.0 middleware BaSyx facilitates the production capabilities and resources through Asset Administration Shells and Submodels. This is used in conjunction with the ERP system which holds the business logic of feasibility checks for customer requests.
