Christian Campo:

  • As briefly discussed in the confcall I think SDK is the right name for tooling and "target stuff" together. For the example that I know (RAP and Riena), tooling and target stuff will go together. So you need tool 1.3 to handle target stuff 1.3. So there it is natural to group them together.
  • So for Riena you could have "Riena SDK Tools" and "Riena SDK Target platform". Would it be sufficient to just have "Riena Tools" and "Riena Target platform" is a good question. I think the expression SDK is not absolutly necessary but it helps to understand the charactaristics of what you deliver since its a very common acronym.
  • Now how do you call the examples or demo? Are they "Riena SDK Examples" or "Riena Examples" ? I am not sure but for some reason "Riena SDK Examples" sounds better me because they showcase the SDK Target platform.

Jeff McAffer:

My concern about using "SDK" in the name is that at least some people see that term and think "oh, that is something I install in my IDE". As such, I would go more for Riena Tooling and Riena Target Platform.

Having said that, "Target Platform" can be misleading as it is really "things you can add to a target platform". Perhaps "Riena Target Components"?

John A points to Bug 310399 as an illustration of the mismatch in user expectations.

follow up

In the May 19 RT PMC call we decided to use "Target Components" in the name of features that are categorized in the Target Platform category in the Helios repo.
