Introduction

When we talk about clustering, we could be referring to clustering of databases (like an Oracle RAC setup), middle tier clustering (with application servers), distributed JMS (multiple brokers and distributed queues with failover) and lastly CMS clustering (like having a clustered Jackrabbit setup). Regardless, the clustering option chosen must make logical sense even if it leaves single points of failure. For example, having multiple Tomcat nodes with the Stardust web app running on each with its own Jackrabbit repository is logically inconsistent since a failover will leave the user without access to the documents he could see through the original node. Likewise, if he logs out and logs in again and is now associated with a different Tomcat instance he would still want to be able to see the documents that were available before.

The setup described here is for a multiple Tomcat, single Jackrabbit (with clustering configuration – as described later), single DB and single MQ environment. It was tested with Apache 2.0, mod_jk 1.2.37, Tomcat 6.0.32 and ActiveMQ 5.2 (the specific version numbers shouldn’t really matter for this discussion however). The reader is  free to extend clustering to the other tiers if the resources required are available.
