Minutes

  • PTP Releases
    • PTP 4.0.4 tentatively planned for Oct 31, will include bug fixes and packaging changes
      • Packaging: how RDT vs PTP are packaged. Was changed for 4.0.3 Helios SR1 for ease of initial installation. PTP and RDT are relatively independent. RDT depends on some of PTP Core. PTP also includes PLDT and ETFw, etc.
      • RDT is very important if using PTP on a large scale system, so needs to be easy to install
        • Thus for 4.0.3, the RDT Remote Tools feature was included with RDT
      • But RDT doesn't want any additional dependencies for the IBM product that uses it (RDP)
        • RDP takes the RDT feature and bundles it with their product.
      • Proposal: Two features, (a) PTP+RDT and (b) RDT alone
        • Greg will discuss with Vivian Kong, who does the packaging for RDP
    • Indigo (PTP 5.0) release - Eclipse Indigo is only at M2 now
    • New Eclipse build server is now hosting PTP 5.0 builds. This is tracking CDT 8.0
      • Last good build was Sept 3 - Greg will investigate why more recent builds have failed
  • PLDT - Parallel Language Development Tools (Beth)
    • MPI Barrier Analysis is working once again. JUnit tests have been updated and run. Ran large barrier analysis benchmark tests. OutOfMemoryException on running ParMetis - Alan also had trouble with this large test case; Alan and Beth to discuss.
  • Other tools for use in PTP development
    • Instantiations SWT designer - GUI builder for SWT and JFace - was purchased by Google; now open source
      • Available on Google Code website
    • Yourkit Profiler - can be used for free for PTP = "open source license" = PTP has Yourkit approval but not that of Eclipse Foundation Yet. CDT has a CQ #105948 - Greg will add PTP to it for Eclipse foundation approval of PTP use of Yourkit too.
  • ETFw - External Tools Framework (Wyatt)
    • Wyatt hopes to have EFS changes into ETFw for some remote functionality (not sure how much) by 4.0.4 release and thus available for SC tutorial
  • GEM - Graphical Explorer for MPI Programs (Alan)
    • Remotizing has been on hold
    • hope to have EFS changes in by 4.0.4 release (no use of java.io.File)
    • Alan working on it the second half of October
    • New GEM function: new view - SC tutorial GEM future work slides detail this. a "Summary view" as a tabbed view. Adding still more, e.g. "Browser view"
  • Proxy protocol changes for increased efficiency in message traffic (Dave W)
  • SCI updates have been checked in (Dave W) - discussion about SCI documentation and availability of latest. Jay/Dave W will check.
  • SC Tutorial - web site update to indicate that students should pre-install Eclipse and PTP - are finally online at http://sc10.supercomputing.org/schedule/event_detail.php?evid=tut149
    • Greg is reviewing slides, making some small changes, removing redundant info
    • Beth will put tutorial module 2 slides on website with pre-install instructions http://wiki.eclipse.org/PTP/tutorials/SC10 - we will provide paper copy for attendees that arrive w/o Eclipse, PTP installed
    • Alan is interested in reviewing the tutorial slides. Beth will send them to him.
    • POINT.iso (LiveDVD includes Eclipse/PTP) - Wyatt will let us know when next version is available. Hopes it will contain only Eclipse 3.6 (not 3.5) to alleviate confusion. Should work on Mac too.
  • Committer Nominations - Max Billingsley has withdrawn his nomination, wishes to be reconsidered later when his job focus is clearer and he contributes more code.
  • Photran status from Jeff Overbey via ptp-dev post (he could not attend)
    • The students in the course will all be developing refactorings; we have about 15 planned, but I don't know how many will make it into 7.0 (the quality of the groups' projects tends to vary a lot).
    • I'm mostly dissertating (if that's not a word, it should be), but I'm working on some improvements to the indexer in the process.
    • As for our undergrads, Ashley Kasza is working on adding some language extensions to the lexer/parser/AST, Matt Fotzler is working on some improvements to the AST, and Abhishek Sharma is making some UI improvements to the VPG Browser.
    • Jeff asks: Beth, when were you planning to burn CDs (or make flash drives, or whatever) for SC?  I'd still like to finish our Windows Installer package (Photran+MinGW) before then, but no guarantees...
      • Beth plans to duplicate CDs the weekend before SC travel, e.g. Nov 6-7, hopes all changes are available by then
