Review of Last Meeting

EclipseCon 2015 F2F Meeting

  • Neither Martin nor David will be at EclipseCon; PC didn't feel like they needed a meeting
  • AI Wayne to verify if he could take on a joint meeting (within next day) -- would need to sort out the time with Bootcamp, Breakfast might work
  • Attendees (for Sunday Afternoon): Maximilian, Jonas - Sunday Evening would probably work best
    • Wayne to make a doodle poll and announce on the Mailing List ; Goals / Agenda Items

Michael: Editor Config File for tabs and spaces config in a project (single setup across IDE's)

  • Single-page website (See EditorConfig - supported by many IDE's but not (yet) Eclipse. The bugzilla entry is 457046.
  • AI Michael Create a bug against Platform/Text for further discussion -- seems related to .doap files as mentioned by Alex Kurtakov on the Eclipse/PMC meeting December 10, 2014 (used by Apache and GNOME projects)

Wayne: Platform Vision Work

  • With the arrival of Jay there's a bit of a shake in the IDE space
  • Eclipse for the next 3 years - still viable for the forseeable future; freedom to choose desktop or web, many different configurations
  • More focus on User Experience - was focused on enabling extenders in the past, looking at User Experience now
    • Wayne pushing on related bugs - for example consistency of feature names and categories; Installer; Line numbers on by default...
  • Eike: There's a couple long-standing bugs that make using Eclipse annoying (for example: changing a file while a builder is running makes the user wait and not the builder wait...)
  • Wayne's initial focus is on the little thing - make more sense to the user (including the website - should be really easy to download, install and start using) - incrementally increase the coolness factor and attract more contributors
  • EMO looking at new, innovative and clever ways bringing in more resources
  • Marcel - Website Feedback: There's no big menu listing the features available in the IDE... (Compare with IntelliJ website - a comprehensive feature set on 1 page that gets updated with every release) - AI Marcel open a bug against AC
  • Michael - WebStorm has a 1-hour walk through all the features - very helpful to understand what is possible even if Workflows are complex ; question how to apply to plugin model (Finding or installing a plugin is easy with Webstorm)

Eike: Getting Oomph into the EPP packages

  • Joining the Release Train for Mars; not sure at what pace Markus wants to go
  • Oomph Installer (standalone app for bootstrapping, that's different than what's considered for the packages) - discussion about using this as a prominent (or the main) download for Eclipse
    • Spent the last 3 weeks coming up with a "simple mode" for the installer (just 2 pages) - already available from the Oomph Download Page - Wayne would like to have it on the Download Page until M5 early Feb
      • Missing automatic detection and configuration of the JRE for now (not a must-have for M5)
    • Product Catalog is currently auto-generated from the EPP Repo and the Release Train Repos
    • Enhancement Request is open for linking the Authoring Tools to the Marketplace
  • The runtime part (in the EPP Packages) is mostly for managing Preferences across multiple workspaces
    • Some functional overlap with Workspace Mechanic, but designed to be simpler

bug 456947 JGit vulnerability

  • PC Looking at patched simrel repo and new EPP packages to address the vulnerability
